The U9 Albury Eagles kicked off their new season in style with a thrilling encounter against a spirited Dorkinians Dodgers side at Meadowbank Stadium.
The Eagles started brightly, settling quickly into the game despite it being the first competitive match of the season. Early pressure paid off as Max opened the scoring with a brilliant finish, setting the tone. Shortly after, debutant Marcell calmly slotted home a penalty to give Albury a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.
In the second period, the Eagles kept their momentum. A close-range tap-in from Rui made it 3-0, before Leo smashed in a long-range strike to put Albury firmly in control at 4-0 going into halftime.
The third period saw chances at both ends, but it remained goalless thanks to solid defending and some great goalkeeping from Tommy in goal.
In the final period, the Dorkinians Dodgers launched a strong comeback, scoring three quick goals to ensure a tense ending for the coaches. But the Eagles held their nerve and showed real character to defend their lead and see out the match for a hard-earned win.
"What a start to the season! Every player gave 100%, and even when the pressure came late in the game, we stuck together and held firm. Great debuts from Marcell and Cian, and a well-deserved win to build on!"
