On a glorious spring morning, Albury Eagles U9s signed off their season in style with a thrilling 6–2 victory at home to local rivals Onslow Lightning, capping off a campaign full of growth, resilience, and team spirit.
With school friendships spanning both sides, there was more than just three points at stake—bragging rights on Monday morning added an extra edge to an already exciting fixture. Onslow, newly promoted to the top division, proved worthy opponents from the outset.
A tight and competitive first period saw both teams testing each other. Rui set the tone early with relentless pressing that unsettled the Onslow defence, while Sullivan stood firm at the back, producing a determined display against Onslow’s standout attacker. Down the right wing, Digby was lively as ever, linking up superbly with Max. Their connection paid off just before the break, as Max found the net to give Albury a deserved lead.
The second period saw momentum shift, with Onslow increasing the pressure. Their persistence paid off when a dangerous cross from the left took a cruel deflection off an Albury defender, leaving Tommy helpless in goal as the scores were levelled. Albury responded well, and Marcell’s tireless work in the box earned him a close-range finish to restore the lead. However, Onslow refused to back down, and another attack from the left caused confusion in the defence, allowing them to equalise once again.
Heading into the third period at 2–2, the game was finely poised. Digby and Rui returned with renewed energy, continuing to drive the team forward. Ashton showed great composure at centre back, while Cian adapted smoothly to his role on the left side of defence. In midfield, Max and Marcell looked increasingly dangerous, and it was Max who once again delivered—his hard work rewarded with a crucial goal to edge Albury ahead going into the final period.
With everything still to play for, Leo entered the fourth period determined to make his mark—and he certainly did. After a brilliant, lung-busting run down the right from Digby, Leo was perfectly placed to slot home and extend the lead to 4–2. Moments later, Leo produced a superb solo effort, weaving through the defence before finishing confidently. He completed a fantastic hat-trick shortly after, putting the result beyond doubt.
The final moments were expertly managed, with the Eagles calmly keeping possession and seeing out the game in style.
It was a hard-fought and well-deserved victory, reflecting the effort and determination shown by every player. Each member of the squad contributed, carrying out their roles with discipline and commitment. The team’s progress this season has been outstanding, built on hard work, teamwork, and a shared desire to improve.
Congratulations to all the boys on a wonderful season—unbeaten since December and defeated only twice. A fantastic achievement.
