Match Report: Albury Hawks vs Ewhurst U11

Saturday 13th December

❄️ Scene Setter
It was one of those mornings where the frost clung to the grass like glitter on a Christmas card. Parents shuffled around the touchline in hats, scarves, and coats so thick they looked like they were auditioning for Frozen 3. The ref, meanwhile, bravely wore both leggings and shorts — a decision that will surely be investigated by the FA’s Health & Safety department.

? Hawks Take Flight
The Hawks started brightly, with George battling like a man possessed to win the ball in midfield. His determination paid off when he set up Teddy, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. A finish so precise it could have been drawn with a ruler. The crowd erupted, and one parent nearly spilled their thermos in celebration. A great start from the Hawks and well deserved.

? Ewhurst Equalise
But Ewhurst aren't a top team by accident. They hit back quickly, carving through the Hawks’ defence and finishing smartly to make it 1–1. The Hawks defenders and keeper claimed they were “just letting them have a go” — generous lads.

? Header Heroics
Moments later, Ewhurst took the lead with a towering header from a corner. 2–1 to the visitors, and suddenly the Hawks had a mountain to climb.

? George’s Chip Shop Special
Cue George, who spotted the keeper off his line and delivered a chip so audacious it should’ve come with salt and vinegar. The ball floated, dipped, and nestled perfectly into the net. Parents gasped, then roared — it was a goal worthy of Match of the Day. 2–2 at half-time, and the Hawks were right back in it.

? Rugby Cameo
The second half began with chaos. Teddy was rugby tackled to the ground — wrong sport, lads! Dusting himself off, he smashed the free kick against the upright with such force the post is probably still ringing. Unlucky doesn’t even cover it.

? Scrappy Third
Ewhurst then bundled in a scrappy goal to make it 3–2. The ball bounced around like a pinball machine before crossing the line. Lucian immediately launched his defence, insisting it didn’t come off him. This reporter can neither confirm nor deny — though VAR (aka shaky iPhone footage) remains inconclusive.

Will Robinson, having played on the wing, was now in goal and looking solid. Brave and dependable as always - offering stability from which the team could build.

?️ Defensive Wall Spotlight
Despite conceding three, the Hawks’ back line was immense. Woody, Lucian, Will B and Will R threw themselves into tackles, blocked shots with every available limb, and generally made life miserable for Ewhurst’s attackers. At one point, Woody slid so far he nearly ended up in Guildford. Arthur in goal was doing his best - making sharp saves, great clearances and communicating well with his defence. He brings calm to the back line and inspires those around him.

? Midfield Mayhem
The centre of the pitch was a war zone. Aaron, Teddy, Kerian battled ferociously, snapping into challenges, chasing every loose ball, and refusing to give Ewhurst an inch. It was less football, more medieval jousting. Out wide, Harry and Jules provided pace and passion, stretching the game and keeping Ewhurst’s defence on red alert. George’s energy was so relentless he probably burned more calories than the entire crowd combined. Jools having his best game - tackling, staying alert and being strong in the challenge. His tough, battling attitude complemented those around him.

? Final Whistle
It finished with a Ewhurst win, who remain top of the league. But the Hawks can take enormous pride in a battling performance that showed grit, determination, and no shortage of skill. Against the best in the division, they proved they’re more than capable of ruffling feathers. On another day, the game may have indeed have gone down as a Hawk's win.

? Man of the Match
The standout star was Will B, whose committed power and relentless pace earned him the coveted Man of the Match award. He covered every blade of frosty grass, tackled like a tank, and surged forward like a runaway train. Well deserved — and probably still running as we speak.

Thanks
Thanks to coach Abs and coach Ian. My ears are still ringing. And a big shout out to coach Percy who snuck down for 15 mins to watch from his Saturday paper round.

Coaches comments
It has been great having the team together on a regular basis - their teamwork is improving and we are slowly building processes into their game. Jools and Harry, both new to this level of football are growing in confidence and ability. William R and Teddy have been wonderful additions to the group. A special mention to Kieran, Will B and Lucian who have all taken their game to a new level with many other teammates not far behind.

We will continue to work on this as well as introduce new defensive and attacking plays. We are excited to see the team grow over the next part of the season. We are lucky to have coaches Ian and Percy so involved and this would not work without them, so my huge thanks to them.

FINALLY - if we forget the weekly photo, please do remind us!
